My Personal Journey To Becoming A Virtual Assistant

Young girl with her grandfather

Let’s rewind back time to the very beginning. I was born in Belarus, and then raised in Ukraine before finally moving to the States on Christmas Eve of 1999. Enjoy this incredible photo of me. And yes I blurred it so it doesn't get flagged 🙄

I'll spare you the details of my childhood (for now), but just know that I did gymnastics growing up & went to college on a full-ride athletic scholarship. Grateful for the lack of student loan debt. While having some fun and flipping around a bit, I also studied business & psychology and worked 4-5 days per week coaching gymnastics and helping run events and birthday parties. How I did it all? Not quite sure. HOWEVER, that did teach me prioritization and multi-tasking, so slay?

I wish I could sit here and tell you how much I learned about business, but if I'm going to be honest with you; I learned nothing. In fact, I would say anything business-related that I know now came from my experience in the jobs that I worked up to this point.

My First "Big-Girl" Job After Graduation

After graduating, I got my very first job with Enterprise Rent-A-Car and honestly, I really enjoyed the job my first year. I had incredible managers, and incredible mentors who gave me the framework for a lot of the things that I still do in my business to this day. Bonus points for also learning how to park backward 😏

Even though the job was great, I knew I wanted something different. I wanted to work on my own time, I wanted to get paid more, and I wanted to have more freedom overall. I started looking around to see what else I could be doing and I stumbled across network marketing.

I Truly Believed That Network Marketing Was My Forever

LISTEN: there are a lot of negative aspects around network marketing and I completely agree with every single one of them. However, at the time; I truly believed that it was THE best option out there, I believed I was truly helping people, and I believed that it was going to be something I did for the rest of my life.

Within 3 years, I made it to the top 35 income earners of the entire company and was speaking on stage at our conferences. It was such an "I made it" moment for me. Sadly, it disappeared really quickly...

The products started changing, the compensation plan started changing, and I started seeing gaps in what the leaders were saying. I started seeing the negative practices that we were promoting. And I started seeing just how toxic network marketing is. I battled with the thought of leaving for a year until I realized that if I truly wanted to be happy, I had to make a change.

How TikTok Brought Me My Dream Career

One day, as I was lying in bed crying (for the 15th day in a row), I came across a girl on TikTok who was making MILLIONS as a virtual assistant. Yes, that totally stopped my scrolling and I started going through all of her videos. As I was looking through them, I realized:

"If she can make this work, so can I"

And that's exactly what I did. Was I scared? Absolutely. But what was even scarier for me was being in the same exact spot months and years down the road. Listen, I wasn't made to lay in bed crying every day because I'm miserable. And neither are you.

My First Year As A Virtual Assistant

My first year as a virtual assistant was a complete whirlwind in the best way possible. I got my first client within 2 weeks of getting started. I became fully booked out within 4 months. And I hit my first 5-figure month within my first 6 months. And along with that, I paid off over $50k in debt in my first year.

Along with all of the successes, I learned a LOT. And that doesn't mean every learning curve was an amazing experience.

  1. I had a client tell people I'm "dumb and useless" in her DM's that she was telling me to manage... (fun)

  2. I had a client tell me to my face that I'm a waste of her money & people are telling her that she's crazy for hiring me vs someone for $5/hour

  3. I had clients completely ghost me

  4. I had clients disrespect my boundaries

And while those scenarios weren't the most fun, I wouldn't be who I am today without them. And for that, I'm grateful.

The Moral Of This Story

First of all, I hope you have a little more understanding of who I am and what got me here. But I also hope that this story gives you the courage to pursue a career as a virtual assistant. ESPECIALLY, if it's something you've been considering.

At the end of the day, nothing in your life will change until YOU decide to make that change. My DM's are always open if you have any questions 🫶🏻
